Present Employment Independant Consultant and Freelance Software Engineer (Mar 2002 Present) Through my Limited company G10 Software Services Ltd, I provide technical services to clients on a daily rate, fixed price, or retainer basis. I can provide services in the areas of IT strategy; software development (architecture, analysis, design, code); systems integration; implementation; troubleshooting; project management; testing; training; technical writing. Some projects I involved with (or have recently completed) are: Writing and presenting a technical strategy document and proposal for a Land Registry system. This involved an evaluation of rearchitecting the existing VB/SQL server fat client application to a tiered archirecture in the .Net environment suitable for browser client and web services operation. Providing technical support and software maintenance to a number of clients on an ad-hoc basis for a vaious systems on UNIX and NT platforms. Assisting a mobile (WAP/SMS) applications provider to migrate from a Microsoft-only platform to a mixed Windows/UNIX environment. This involved Solaris system management and Oracle DBA duties; educating the clients technical staff about the differences between the platforms; and helping re-architect the persistence tier of the application to be platform-neutral. Technical Architect - TBI Ltd (Mar 2002 Present) I also work as Technical Architect and Principal Engineer for TBI Ltd. Here, I am responsible for defining and delivering technical solutions for our Clients and for helping our clients to develop those solutions through Systems Integration, business process and application development techniques. This has been achieved by using a variety of tools including Java 2 (JBuilder), Perl (Active Perl), C++ (Visual C++) across a variety of technologies (J2EE, DCOM, LDAP, XML/SOAP), operating systems (Windows, Solaris, AIX) and databases (Oracle, MS SQL-Server), using OO-techniques, UML and Extreme Programming. Past Employment Technical Architect - Divine Solutions UK Ltd (Sep 1993 Mar 2002) Although now known as Divine Solutions (UK) Ltd, the company has been through a number of name changes and mergers and was previously known as Kinesis, Kinesis Products, Global Recall, and SageMaker. For 7 years, I was responsible for many aspects of the ongoing development of the Athena knowledge management product suite and its predecessors. The software is available on a number of platforms including several flavours of UNIX, Windows NT Server (inc. Microsoft SQL Server) and Novell NLM. We supplied both a Windows client and an HTML web client (JSP-based). My role as product technical architect gave me overall responsibility for all technical aspects of the product suite. Achievements Working with team sizes of up to 8, I was directly responsible for design and implementation of many components of the product set including: 1994 Technical lead on the team of 3 who designed and implemented the initial version of the server. The main server (middle tier business logic) was written in C. There was a published API. 1995 Implemented the first 16-bit windows client using Visual Basic 3. 1995 Many enhancements including server-based email integration using SMTP, and a total rework of the authorisation (ACL) model. Also ported to Solaris, HP-UX, ICL DRS6000 and AIX. 1996 Ported the server to Windows NT and MS SQL Server. This required rewriting much IPC and process monitoring code/signal handling code, and rewriting all the shell scripting in perl. 1997 Delivered components for the 32-bit Windows client based on an explorer namespace extension, implemented in Visual C++ and Visual Basic integrated using COM. 1998 Designed and implemented an HTTP extension to the system to allow web clients to download/upload documents. To minimise runtime overhead and maximise portability, I built support for HTTP directly into the code rather than integrating with a web server API. 2000 Designed the architecture (and worked on the development) to support a stepwise transition of the system from traditional 3-tier client-server architecture to a Java/Web enabled environment encompassing technologies such as JSP, servlets, beans and J2EE. This to replace the previous Active Server Page/COM web toolkit. 2001 Technical design work and prototyping for integration of Athena with other products from the divine product portfolio (single sign-on and unified security model). Other Responsibilities In addition, I had responsibility for the following activities within the product team: Product management (planning, release control, configuration management, source code control, build management); Technical evaluation of potential technology suppliers and/or acquisition targets; Scalability/performance testing; Assisting with specification and implementation of customer systems; Troubleshooting and 3rd line support; Evaluation, procurement, installation and support of development hardware, tools etc; Team leading and team building including recruitment of developers and support staff; Internal training, both of new recruits within the development team and also sales, consultancy, and support personnel elsewhere within the organization. Software Engineer Admiral Computing Ltd (Aug 1991 Sep 1993) I Worked for Admiral Computing, the software development and integration part of the Admiral group. Although based in the Bristol office, much of the work was on customer sites. The development work covered a wide variety of platforms (PC; Macintosh; UNIX), languages (pascal; C; SQL*Forms; PL/SQL) and application areas (military, finance, commercial). Software Engineer Sema Group Systems Limited (Oct 1988 Jul 1991) I worked for Sema group in the Communications division. I worked on both data communications projects (OSI Comms in C; Command and Control in Ada) and telecommunications (VMS/Fortran telephony billing systems).
