About Tim Robinson
I am an experienced software professional, having
been working full-time in various software
roles since I graduated in 1988. I have worked for
a number of systems houses and ISVs doing both product
development and services work, and formed my own
company in early 2002.
My career is notable for breadth of experience.
I have developed systems ranging from embedded real-time
through to IBM mainframe via Macintosh, NeXT and
VAX as well as the obligatory Wintel, UNIX and Java
platforms; I have used most programming languages;
and worked in many application areas from defence
through to finance.
However, experience is only a means to an end. What
I consider most important is my ability to leverage this background
knowledge and the appropriate tools in the best
way to solve a real-world problem.
I have a very strong customer focus and goal orientation
in my work. I do not approach a task with a specific
methodology, tool or product in mind; rather I concentrate
on understanding the requirement and then recommend
the methodology and technology to suit.

Locations
I am based in Bristol, in the South West of the
UK. Depending on the nature of the work, I can work from home or travel to your (or your customer's) location.
Additionally I have many years' experience of international telecommuting - working
closely with colleagues and clients in America,
India and the Far East. I have often worked in conjunction with
staff in other time zones to create an extended
working day in order to make best use of expensive
resources, complete urgent jobs, or provide out-of-hours customer support.
Contract Terms
I have extensive experience in all aspects of the project lifecycle. I can work autonomously to deliver entire projects, or in conjunction with your existing project
team using your preferred methodologies.
For a known requirement, I am happy to undertake
fixed-price work. Unlike many software development
houses, I am confident of my ability to deliver
on time and to quality, so
am prepared to take 100% of the risk in these cases.
However, for the kind of complex scenarios I specialise in,
it is often not possible to fix the scope of work up front because of the level of uncertainty and risk.
They key to successful T&M working arrangements is my ability to get up to speed quickly in an unfamiliar environment, combined with frequent and effective progress reporting.
I am also familiar with Agile Development techniques (also known as
Extreme Programming) for software development.
